The American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 88, representing nearly 2,800 workers of Multnomah County conducted an emergency endorsement process Wednesday, March 10, 2010, due to the last minute changes in the Multnomah County candidate filings for County Chair and Commissioner District 2. They are pleased to announce the endorsement of Jeff Cogen (www.jeffcogen.com) for Multnomah County Chair.

The Candidate Forum for Multnomah County Commissioner District 2 included a panel of the following 7 candidates: Karol Collymore, Chuck Currie, Gary Hansen, Tom Markgraf, Roberta Phillip, Maria Rubio and Loretta Smith. Each candidate had an opportunity to make opening and closing statements, and each responded to questions submitted directly by the members. Members were impressed with the level of quality, character and depth of experience of the candidates. Concluding the Forum, members had a vigorous discussion for close to two hours, including 3 straw polls, and numerous proposals were made for endorsement scenarios. Unable to reach consensus, members voted to withhold endorsement for Multnomah County Commissioner District 2 at this time. An endorsement decision for District 2 will be revisited at a later date.

AFSCME Local 88 will work hard to see that Jeff Cogen becomes elected as the next Multnomah County Chair. AFSCME Local 88 thanks all of the candidates and members who participated in this democratic process.
