Congratulations, We Did It! Library District Measure Moves Forward

By admin / On / In Local 88

Local 88 is happy to report that today the Multnomah County Commission voted unanimously to refer a Library District measure to the voters this November.  This historic measure will give voters the chance to approve dedicated, stable funding for our award-winning Multnomah County Library.

As you know, our Library is primarily funded with temporary levies.   As a result, library funding has been unreliable, causing cuts to hours, services, programs and the budget for books.

The Libraries Yes! campaign will work hard over the coming months to pass the measure to create a Multnomah County Library District, and Local 88 will be right there with them.  We hope you will join us in our work to secure the future of our treasured library system.  The Library District means that all funds collected will go to the library and cannot be used for other programs.  It will restore library services, hours, activities and funds for new books and materials.  It will be overseen by the Board of County Commissioners, with input from an independent Library Advisory Board.

Over the next few weeks, Libraries Yes! will be kicking off the campaign and starting their efforts to get the word out to the community about the November measure for our Library.  Please sign up to volunteer today from their website (we will be trying to call you as well): www.librariesyes.com/get-involved.

And, please help spread the word:  Our Library has earned our trust and support, and now needs a Library District to have dedicated, stable and adequate funding into the future.

Thank you!  Onward to November!

P.S. – The Libraries Yes! campaign will be updating their website (www.librariesyes.com) in the next two weeks with more information about the Library District measure. They will also keep supporters informed through Facebook (www.facebook.com/LibrariesYes).
