My name is Gisela Garcia and I’m a Program Technician with the Health Department Healthy Families Program, where my responsibilities include data entry and management, reporting, technical assistance, and training. I support the community health workers and community health nurses because they strengthen our communities by informing families on health issues and empower them to make environmental changes to support their health outcomes.

I am also a proud Union member. I think it is important to belong to a Union to ensure fair treatment in the workplace. This includes the power to negotiate for favorable working conditions and fair benefits through our collective bargaining power.

Our Union recently settled a contract that allows members whose families are experiencing immigration issues to use sick leave for certain immigration matters. This allows members to focus on supporting their families instead of worrying about being disciplined.

Also, our contract protects employees from microaggressions in the workplace. Members experiencing microaggressions now have a way to report incidents and have their matter be taken seriously.

Lastly, I also want to highlight that our contract broadened the definition of family so that more members in non-traditional families, or who have close friends that form the equivalent of a family bond, can utilize sick leave and bereavement leave for their loved ones.

I use to work for a non-union environment. The atmosphere was unfair and not safe. And, from an economic perspective, the pay and benefits did not suffice to provide for one’s family. This is why I know the value of our Union and I am committed to support my fellow Union members and give a voice to those who are afraid to speak up. Are you commitment to our Union? You can start with signing a membership card.

A little about me, Coke or Pepsi? Neither. If I was to win the lottery I would buy my parents their dream house. When I am not glued to a computer screen, I like to spend time with my family, work in my garden, and try very hard not to be the worst Mexican BINGO player when I play with my 7yr old son.

I also enjoy moonlight strolls on the beach, red roses by the armful, and dancing.  Just kidding! I’m not a fan of any of those things (except the dancing and I do a mean Macarena!). But seriously, my family and friends would describe me as easy going, a good listener, funny, and confident.

If I could have a superpower, I would choose the power to heal so that I could take away the pain of people suffering from serious illnesses.

My secret talent is taking amazing selfies, it makes all the difference to know the basics such as angles and lighting. Just check-out these few below.  😉
