DESCRIPTION:Whether you have been a steward for many years\, or new to the position\, this 2-day training is for you! This training will walk new stewards (and those that need a refresher) through their critical skills\, concepts and scenarios to become an effective steward. As new union activists\, you will become familiar with your contract\, learn about basic worker rights\, and the role of the steward as an organizer\, leader\, communicator and advocate in the workplace. Seasoned stewards will serve as a source of knowledge\, exchange best practices with others\, and learn new tactics for identifying leaders. We invite you to learn and connect\, as we build collective power! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen:\nApril 26th-27th\, 2024\n8:00 AM- 4:00 PM \nWhere:\nSEIU 503 Building\, 525 NE Oregon St. Portland OR 97232 \n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants will:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn the roles and responsibilities of a steward in the workplace.\nGet familiar with your contract and other worker rights and how to enforce them.\nLearn the 5 steps of the grievance process.\nDiscuss tips\, tools\, and strategies for being a great steward.\nLearn the appropriate and respectful terms to use in discussing issues about race and gender oppression\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho should attend?\n\n\n\n\n\nAll Local 88 members interested in becoming a steward\, stewards interested in more training and union activists. \n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease register as early as possible to ensure you get a seat\, are counted for food and material\, and to ensure that enough notice is given to your supervisor for approval. DESCRIPTION:As we head into bargaining\, we want to increase our membership to have more power at the bargaining table. As members\, we can all work on this together to make our union as strong as possible. We have set a goal of 88% membership since we are Local 88 and are looking for interested members to help us get there! \nWe are building a member outreach plan and part of it is to train interested members in how to do membership outreach. We are excited to get started and are developing an incentive program to thank people for volunteering. \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Training\n\n\n\n\nThis training will teach participants skills to conduct effective membership conversations\, focusing on how to engage potential members\, address questions or concerns\, and highlight the importance of union solidarity. We’ll dive into the core elements of an organizing conversation—listening\, connecting on shared values\, and guiding conversations toward union membership.
