Portland Labor History Tour

The Portland Labor History Tour is a self-guided tour designed to put people in touch with our city’s rich labor history, a history that deserves to be better known.

Working people in Portland have long fought for living wages, sustainable work hours, safe working conditions, and public policies for the common good. And, more often than not, they’ve faced fierce resistance from employers and local authorities.

Knowing this history, and linking it to the streets we travel and the buildings we pass, brings the city to life in a new way. That’s not all. Knowing this history can inspire us to keep working for change even when signs of progress are hard to see. Learning about the choices people made in the past, and the strategies they pursued, can also help us better confront the challenges of the present.

More tour sites will be added, so check back often. And, if you have ideas for sites that you’d like to see added, let us know. We also welcome your help in publicizing the tour.
