Susheela Jayapal has proudly served as your District 2 Multnomah County Commissioner since January 2019. She was born in India and came to the United States when she was 16, to go to college. A resident of Northeast Portland since 1994, Susheela is a lawyer, whose last legal job was as General Counsel for Adidas America. She also spent two decades as a volunteer community leader/advocate for a number of different community-based organizations. The Commissioner’s priorities include houselessness, economic justice, community safety, and climate change – all with a focus on equity and racial justice, and with a vision of a Multnomah County where all people can thrive. In her first term, Commissioner Jayapal has been a fierce advocate for equitable services for Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color, and immigrants and refugees; has secured funding for outreach, rent assistance, and other critical services for people experiencing houselessness; has advanced community-centered solutions to public safety; and has implemented measures to clean our air and develop climate resilience.
