Candidate Statement: Shannon Singleton, Multnomah County Commissioner, District 2

Shannon Singleton
Shannon Singleton, endorsed by Local 88 for Multnomah County Commissioner, District 2

As someone who first walked a picket line with my grandmother, an IBEW member, I am humbled and honored to accept the backing of the working people who are the backbone of our local government and social safety net. I was raised in a working-class family and I know how vital it is to have pay and benefits that allow you to take care of your family – not just to survive, but to thrive. I know what it’s like to choose which bill to pay because your income doesn’t cover everything. I know the importance of access to food programs to ensure that your family doesn’t go hungry. When it was time to choose a career, I chose social work and I have spent my career supporting people experiencing poverty and homelessness, fleeing domestic violence, seeking to recover from sexual assaults, and being raised in a group home for foster youth.  I’ve run shelters, treatment programs, and housing programs, and I know that the experts on the front lines of this work – alongside those receiving services – must be at the center of developing policies and budgets.

And that is exactly what I will do as your next Multnomah County Commissioner for District 2. I know your work is critical to the health and wellbeing of our community and I am so proud to be endorsed by both AFSCME Local 88 and Local 189, along with many other frontline workers in our community. You know better than anyone that it’s past time for us to turn the page on the politics of division and chaos.  We need a leader with a proven track record of bringing people together to address complex problems in our community, a leader who knows how to collaborate to get things done without compromising on values. A leader, like me, who is ready to move our community forward with transparency, accountability, and hope. I am committed to ensuring that workers are valued and supported and I will continue to fight for the respect and protections you deserve. Thank you for your trust and support. I ask for your vote and for you to help spread the word about my campaign, so together we can make a meaningful difference for Multnomah County.
